OUR STORY
There was a time in our lives when all we wanted was a country home, a place to grow a garden, and enjoy the quietude that comes with living in the country. Over the years we have experienced this dream unfold. In pursuing a life where less is more and wholesomeness is cherished a new desire formed; to share this beautiful life we live with others so that hopefully it will inspire you and your family.
Gardening is a way of escape for us. We love to see our bees enjoying the flowers as they collect pollen and nectar. The whole process from the seeds sprouting, to becoming a seedlings and being planted in the garden is exciting. Then to watch them grow and develop fruit is the best feeling in the world. Our goal is to be able to eat from our garden all year long.
Watching our dogs play and. be happy never gets old. There is something so special about seeing them be filled with so much happiness and living their best life. The unconditional love they give, their companionship is something to be treasured.
It is our greatest joy to share the lessons we have learned and are still learning along the way. From caring for our pets, apiary, and from our garden to the kitchen table, these lessons have taught us to better care for our environment. Most important it taught us how we can better care for one another.
Our goal is to create a community with those of you near and far, and hopefully inspire you to slow down and enjoy the simple things.
Welcome to our Homestead, pull up a chair, sit and relax for a while.
Living Life With Max
A Tribute To a Very Special Dachshund
Life with Max was never dull. Max was a short hair chocolate and tan mini dachshund who was living his best life here at Old Oak Homestead.Max came to us after his original human parents were needing to rehome him. We already had three dogs and a cat, but not taking him was not an option. Max very quickly became part of our family.
Dachshund's are known to choose their person, and Max chose Joseph. All Max wanted to do was to go everywhere with his daddy. He was even content to just be held. But he especially loved riding on the mower and the tractor.
Max loved to eat the blueberries off the bushes and go strawberry picking. If we were not paying attention he would eat green beans straight off the bush. He was obsessed with eating fresh fruit and vegetables out of the garden. He knew the good stuff and was living the good life. He was my gardening buddy.
Out of the blue on a Thursday afternoon, Max started to have seizures. After a spending a few days at the emergency vet, Max came home, but things were not the same. He was getting sicker. We took him to the University of Georgia Veterinary Training Hospital where he had an MRI. We learned that Max had in inoperable cancerous brain tumor that had spread all through his brain. There was nothing that could be done to help him. Max peacefully passed away in our arms with lots of love and kisses at the UGA Veterinary Hospital.
We are heart broken. Max had just turned 5 years old.
In Memory of Living Life with Max
Grow It Forward
What is Grow It Forward? This is our way of giving back to the community and honoring the life of little dog that made such an impact in our lives. Grow it Forward is where people purchase seed packets which are in turn giving to families in need to help them learn how grow a garden.
Because Max's favorite thing to do (other than sit in his daddies lap) was to go to the garden, 100% of the profits from the purchase of these seeds packets will go to a dauchsand rescue of our choosing to help with medical and food cost associated with needing to foster precious little pups like Max until they find their fur-ever family.
